As Scouts arrive, pair them up and have them practice these items required to earn their Bobcat rank (refer to the Bobcat Trail section of the Wolf or Bear handbook). (Boys who have already earned Bobcat should be paired with boys who have not so that they can encourage them and coach them.)
If all of the boys in your den have already earned Bobcat, substitute another activity, such as an outdoor game of tag or an indoor game of marbles.
Have the Scouts lead an opening flag ceremony where the colors are presented and everyone says the Pledge of Allegiance.
Have the den select a denner and assistant denner. Make sure that the members of the den understand that this is a short term appointment and that other members of the den will get a chance to be denner or assistant denner. Also make sure that they understand that this is not a 'figure head' position - there are real responsibilities (such as helping to prepare for meetings and helping to clean up afterwards.)
Have a short ceremony where you present the denner and assistant denner cords to the new denner and assistant denner.
In addition,
Have the den select a song from resources available on this CD, from the Cub Scout song book, or from Internet sources. Practice the song until everyone knows it well. Contact the Cubmaster and volunteer to have your den sing this song at an upcoming Pack meeting.
Practice the skit that the den selected at a previous meeting.
Give the Cub Scouts a word search puzzle to solve. Then give them a blank word search puzzle and have them make their own.
Teach the den the rules of the game charades and play the game.
Based on an Indian custom, the living circle may be used alone or as a part of another ceremony. It reminds a Cub Scout of the find friendships he is making in Cub Scouting.
Form the Living Circle by standing with your Den Leader and den in a close circle, facing inward. Ask everyone to turn slightly to the right in the circle and extend his left hand into the center, palm downward and left thumb pointing to the right.
Have each boy grasp the extended thumb of the person on this left, thus making a living circle. Each person should hold his right hand high above his head in the Cub Scout sign. The Cub Scout Promise or Law of the Pack may then be said as part of the ceremony.
