Your Fourth Cub Scout Meeting

One of your first four meetings will probably be a Pack meeting. As a Den Leader, your involvement in Pack meeting preparation will generally be limited to these areas:

  1. Notify the Cubmaster and Advancement Chairperson about awards that your scouts are entitled to receive. Do this a week before the Pack meeting.
  2. Have your den ready to participate in an opening or closing ceremony when it's their turn
  3. Have your den ready to perform a skit or song that they've volunteered to do
  4. Other miscellaneous tasks that the Cubmaster may ask you to get involved with (e.g., participation in a leader skit or special ceremony)

Remember to take your den flag to the Pack meeting and encourage your den to sit together.

The following is a den meeting plan that you won't need this week because of the Pack meeting, so put it aside for a rainy day...

  1. Before the Meeting

    1. Make copies of the Arrow Maze to use during Gathering Time.
    2. Have immediate recognition beads available.
    3. Wolf dens - Bring a ball, board, etc that are needed for the Feats of Skill activity.
    4. Bear dens - Bring a bar of soap, a plastic butter knife, trash bags, paper towels, blank paper, markers, and other items that will be needed for the Soap Carvings activity.

  2. Gathering Time

When Scouts arrive, give them an Arrow Maze to work on.

  3. Opening

Ask the denner and assistant denner to lead an opening ceremony of their choosing.

  4. Business Items

Pass out immediate recognition beads near the beginning of the meeting (or just before the end of the meeting). Then,

    • Wolf Dens - Health and Safety (See Wolf Achievement 3)

Discuss why it's important to keep your body strong and clean. Discuss why it's important to know some first aid techniques and when they might be used.

    • Bear Dens - Knife Safety (See Bear Achievement 19)

      Discuss knife safety.

  5. Activities

    • Wolf Dens - Feats of Skill (See Wolf Achievement 1)

Go outside and work on Wolf achievement 1 (Feats of Skill). This involves:

      • Playing catch with a ball
      • walking on the edge of a board
      • rolling
      • jumping
      • doing the elephant walk, crab walk, and frog leap
      • passing a basketball
      • running in place

    • Bear Dens - Soap carving

Make a soap carving as described in Bear achievement 19. Earn the Whittling Chip card. Make the soap carvings outside if possible and be sure to clean up after the den regardless of where the activity is done.

  6. Closing

Have the boys form a circle about an arm's length apart. The boys chant "Do You Best" about five times, starting at low volume and getting louder each repetition.

  7. After the Meeting

    1. Clean up your meeting place thoroughly
    2. Discuss how the meeting went with your Tiger Cub and with some of the other members of the den. Adjust future meeting plans as appropriate.
    3. Request a Tour Permit for any Go See It activity that you'll do in a upcoming weeks.
    4. If any of your scouts have completed awards or advancement report it to the Cubmaster or Pack Advancement chairperson.
    5. Review plans for your next meeting.
    6. Thank your co-leaders and den chief (if you have one).
