Your Fifth Cub Scout Meeting

  1. Before the Meeting

    1. Make copies of the Washington Words sheet for the Gathering Time activity.
    2. Have immediate recognition beads available.
    3. Pick up one or two booklets covering an Academic or Sports award at the Scout Shop.
    4. Bring a kick ball, frisbee, whiffle ball and bat, and other items needed to have fun tonight!
    5. Bring copies of the words to God Bless America or another patriotic song of your choosing.

  2. Gathering Time

As Scouts arrive, give them a Washington words worksheet.

  3. Opening

Have the denner lead the Pledge of Allegiance, then have everyone say the Cub Scout Promise.

  4. Business Items

Don't forget immediate recognition. Then, discuss the BSA Academics and Sports Program. make sure that all of the scouts in your den know that they can earn belt loops for basic understanding of a sport or academic field and a pin for a longer term accomplishment (such as playing on a team for an entire season.)

  5. Activities

Have an outdoor fun day where the den plays tag, tosses frisbees, plays kick-ball or whiffle ball, etc. The point here is that not every meeting has to include a craft project or work on a Cub Scout rank requirement. It's important that scouting be fun and it's OK to have an occasional den meeting where the only purpose of the meeting is to HAVE FUN!

(But have a back-up plan in case the weather does not co-operate!)

  6. Closing

Give everyone a copy of the words to God Bless America (or another patriotic song) and teach them the tune. Then have everyone sing the song for a closing.

    God Bless America
    Land that I love
    Stand beside her
    And guide her
    Through the night
    With a light from above
    From the Mountains
    To the Prairies,
    To the Oceans,
    White with foam
    God Bless America
    My Home sweet Home
    God Bless America
    My Home sweet Home

  7. After the Meeting

    1. Volunteer your den to lead the patriotic song at the next Pack meeting.
    2. Clean up your meeting place thoroughly
    3. Discuss how the meeting went with your Tiger Cub and with some of the other members of the den. Adjust future meeting plans as appropriate.
    4. Request a Tour Permit for any Go See It activity that you'll do in a upcoming weeks.
    5. If any of your scouts have completed awards or advancement report it to the Cubmaster or Pack Advancement chairperson.
    6. Review plans for your next meeting.
    7. Thank your co-leaders and den chief (if you have one).
