Your Fourth Webelos Meeting

  1. Before the Meeting

    1. Have flags (or flag shaped material) available to practice folding.
    2. Make copies of selected pages from the tree identification booklet that is included on this CD.

  2. Gathering Time

As Scouts arrive, pair them up and ask them to practice folding the flag. (Where to get flags? Ask your Cubmaster or Committee Chair - the Pack probably has extra flags available. If you have the resources, you may want to pick up one or two of your own. In a pinch, you can use another piece of fabric cut to proper flag dimensions and marked with a Sharpie marker to show the fields. (There is no legal standard for flag proportions - the most commonly used flags use a ratio of 10:19, 2:3, 3:5, and 5:8; a 36"x48" flag works well.)

How to fold flags: If you have a den chief or a Webelos scout who has demonstrated knowledge of the proper technique, let them show others. If no one skilled in the art of folding flags is available, review this page. )

  3. Opening

After an opening flag ceremony lead by the den, conduct a uniform inspection. The Scout Shop has a uniform inspection sheet that you can purchase for pennies or you can make up your own.

  4. Activity Badge Fun - Forester - Tree Identification

Take your den outside near your meeting place and challenge the scouts to find and properly identify as many different types of leaves as they can. You can print selected pages from this Tree Identification booklet (also available online at http://www.dfr.state.nc.us/publications/treeid99.pdf).

Print these pages and copy them for the scouts to use.

    • Shortleaf Pine
    • Loblolly Pine
    • Longleaf Pine
    • Eastern Cottonwood
    • Black Walnut
    • Pecan
    • White Oak
    • Southern Red Oak
    • Water Oak
    • Southern Magnolia
    • Sweet Gum
    • Yellow Poplar
    • Redbud
    • Flowering Dogwood
    • American Holly
    • Red Maple

These are trees that may be common in Wake County - you may also find other types of trees not on this list.

Make sure that the scouts understand that it is not acceptable to pull leaves off of living trees during this activity.

  5. Preparation

Ask your den chief to tell the Webelos about the Boy Scout program. Ask him specific questions about these areas if he neglects to bring them up:

    • What is a BS unit called? (a Troop, analogous to a Cub Scout Pack)
    • How is a BS Troop subdivided? (into Patrols, analogous to Cub Scout Dens)
    • What are the BS ranks? (Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, Star, Life, Eagle)
    • What are the requirements for BS ranks?
    • What are Merit Badges? How are they earned?
    • What is the Order of the Arrow (or OA)?
    • What do Boy Scouts do at Summer Camp? How long do they stay at Summer Camp?

  6. Closing

We borrow this closing from the sports world:

Start with the denner (let's pretend his name is Eric). Have everyone cheer:

"Eric, Eric, he's our man, if he can't do it..."

Let the denner then pick one of the other scouts and introduce his name by cheering

    "Tommy can!"

Then everyone repeats the cheer with the new name

"Tommy, Tommy, he's our man, if he can't do it..."

Each time, the last boy introduced to the cheer picks the name of another boy who has not yet been called, until all members of the den have been named.

You can include the names of Den Chiefs and Den Leaders if you want to.

Finally, when all individuals have been named, the last line should change to

    "No one can!"

  7. After the Meeting

    1. Clean up your meeting place thoroughly
    2. Discuss how the meeting went with your Tiger Cub and with some of the other members of the den. Adjust future meeting plans as appropriate.
    3. Request a Tour Permit for any Go See It activity that you'll do in a upcoming weeks.
    4. If any of your scouts have completed awards or advancement report it to the Cubmaster or Pack Advancement chairperson.
    5. Review plans for your next meeting.
    6. Thank your co-leaders and den chief (if you have one).
