Cub Scout Leader Goody Boxes

A 'Goody Box' is simply a storage box with items that can be used in Den projects and games.

Start with a plastic, 12-gallon, flip-top box. (Pack 356 supplies one of these for each Den - if you don't have one ask for it.)

Now fill the box with items from the list shown below (you don't have to include everything in order for your goody box to be useful). For some items (e.g., scissors) you may want to include one for each Scout in your den (or at least enough for pairs of Scouts to share one).

aluminum pie pan American flag balls of strings
beads (assorted) boards (1"x1", short enough to fit in box) calculator

Now, what do you do with it?

You'll find the goody box to be a real asset in most projects that you do. (You'll constantly be looking for paper, scissors, glue, etc).

But you'll really appreciate it when you find that the activity you had planned to do for 45 minutes only lasted 20 minutes. Here are just a few 'quickie' ideas that the goody box makes possible:

Make First Aid woggles
Paint a red cross on a film container with nail polish. Hot glue a piece of PVC pipe to the back. Fill the container with bandaids. (By the way, a woggle is a fancy neckerchief slide.)

Play "Lung Ball'
Place 2 dividers (the boards listed above) on a table (parallel to each other and about 2 feet apart). With one Scout on each side of the table, drop a Ping Pong ball in the center of the area bounded by the boards and table edges. The Scouts blow the ball at each other - if it goes over the side the Scout who blew it over gets a point. No hands allowed! (Variation: 'team lung ball'!)

Go outside and play Ultimate Frisbie or Frisbie tag

Make handpuppets
Decorate paper lunch bags with markers, feathers, and shapes cut from construction paper.

Practice folding the flag

Play 'Password'
Write Cub Scout related words on the index cards. Divide the den into 2 teams. Show a word to the first Scout on each team. They have to say one word that will make a team mate guess the word on the index card. Start at 10 points per word and subtract a point each time a clue is given. When the points for a word reach 0 or the word is guessed, the next two Scouts play the next word.

Make helicopters
Carry photocopies of this page in your goody box. For a quick activity, cut out on the bold line, fold as directed on the dotted lines, slip a paperclip over the end, and toss it in the air.

Invent a game
The Scouts make up rules to their own game. Use paper, markers, and rulers to make a game board. Use beads or rocks as game pieces. Use dice to move, if necessary.

These are just a few ideas. You'll find lots of similar ideas elsewhere on this CD and on the World Wide Web.
